My Cheongsam

Essay by Joy Xiang

“My Cheongsam” is a piece I created in trying to reconcile these two cultures I’m a part of: one which I grew up in, being born in Canada, and the other I feel very separate from, using childhood clothing as an entry point. In reclaiming this Chinese identity for myself, I reclaim a dress with roots in colonization and misogyny, one through a lens I control myself. By situating myself in familiar cultural places–my grandmother’s kitchen, the Chinese restaurant where our family would eat dim sum–I’ve denounced feelings of alienation and allowing myself to exist freely between these two ways of life.
