November 3 – December 9, 2017
Opening Reception: Friday, November 3rd, 7-10pm
Featuring the work of Ray Dark, James Knott, Maddy Mathews, Cotey Pope and Liana Schmidt, Installation as a Subversive Art examines the subject of where films sets and installation art merge. The title (in reference to Amos Vogel’s seminal film history book), explores how installation art can translate the magic occurring from films sets into the gallery setting. Considering fantasy and playfulness contribute to a successful film set, what can artists learn from this realm?
Installation as a Subversive Art seeks to explore how to make the most of experiencing a work of art. The show asks, how can we derive the maximum amount of pleasure from a piece? How is enjoyment quantified?
Liana Schmidt gratefully acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council and the Toronto Arts Council.
