First Impressions (The Art of Boat Names) is an animated video that features boat names coming into frame alphabetically. The transitions between words moving across a screen, and the concept of absurd names written on boats propelled this idea forward into its final animated form. First Impressions is imbued with various components of drawing, including paper texture, line and shape. It examines a predisposition in boat culture to identify oneself with graphic symbols and shrewd puns. At first glance, these words conjure imagery unrelated to boats; the ludicrousness of naming as a discrete act comes into play, as well as with the visual strength of mobile words.
