Call for submissions: Where is home?

[title title=”Call for submissions: Where is home? curated by Zviko Mhakayakora”]

Xpace Cultural Centre is seeking work from emerging and/or student designers and artists for an exhibition that interrogates the ways in which contemporary design and art can be used as a tool to depict the concept of home. Curated by Zviko Mhakayakora, the exhibition will run from January 6 – February 4, 2017 and will be included in the Toronto Design Offsite Festival 2017.

This exhibition seeks to explore the different ways through which the concept of home is formed when immigration and other factors are considered. Home, then becomes a term that shifts depending on the person who is defining it at that moment.

The overarching purpose of this exhibition is to open our minds up to the idea that home may mean different things to different people. Colonization has played a large part on the ways in which we view home. How can contemporary design and art be used as a tool for reclamation and decolonization of the concept of home?

Works must be ready for exhibition by January 1, 2017. Selected artists will be notified in November 2016. All selected participants will be paid a project fee for the exhibition.

To apply, you must provide:

1. Project Description (250-500 words): The project description should give a clear and concrete description of the work you are proposing for installation.

2. Curriculum Vitae (Max 3 pages): Your CV should include education and exhibition history, as well as any relevant experience, reviews, etc.

3. Visual Support Material with accompanying Support Material List (5-10 images and/or minutes of video): Images must be in JPG format. You may provide links to video work/documentation.
