This workshop focuses on teaching the tradition of Mexican 𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒂𝒈𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒐𝒔– small folk charms made of tin often used for protection. Led by María de Los Ángeles, participants will learn about the history and significance of milagritos, exploring their craftsmanship and make their own milagritos by learning the repujado (embossing) technique. This experience encourages participants to think about their personal connection to the practice, after learning about the cultural significance and meaning of the milagritos.
About the facilitator:
María de Los Ángeles is a Mexican artist and illustrator based in Toronto. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Design in Illustration at OCAD University. She uses textures and collaging methods to create whimsical narrative pieces filled with intrinsic detail. Although her focus is on editorial illustration, she likes working with different printmaking techniques and making charms.
Ángeles travels back and forth between México and Toronto, influencing her art with visual images from the warm South and the North. Her work references folk art, pop culture, and her favourite artists. Through the use of mixed media, her work appeals to a modern audience.
María de Los Ángeles is passionate about supporting creative communities. She was a resident at the Global Experiential Project with Tony Macarena from 2023 to 2024, and a mentee at Project Crea 2024.
