Observations pulls visual references from the highly romanticized landscapes in the 19th century from the Hudson River School. Following in the tradition of collecting imagery as part of a ‘field study’ exploration, MacDonald has collected photographs, studies and sketches to create a synthesized version of Toronto Island’s landscape in the studio. The works created through this process recontextualize and subvert the history of traditional romantic landscape painting with kitsch, humour and generational aesthetics.

*Megan MacDonald is a recent OCADU graduated, and was awarded Xpace Cultural Centre’s summer residency at Artscape Gibraltor Point, 2013.
