Image designed by Mary Chen and Theresa Wang

Join curators Mary Chen and Theresa Wang for a guided tour of their exhibition Soft Refractions.

Soft Refractions is group exhibition featuring the works of DeBugReBoot, Jessy Kitchen, HaeAhn Kwon, IvanovStoeva, Carson Teal, and Xuan Ye. The artists featured in Soft Refractions demonstrate a desire to destabilize value systems, and, in turn, mine for new capacities. As manners of representation stretch rapidly into new forms, this exhibition speculates looking at the boundary for otherwise encounters to invoke a mediated articulation of the contemporary world.

Mary Chen is an image-based artist trained in design and visual arts. By uniting techniques of cinematography, fashion and performance art, Chen’s imagery reflects upon ways in which Asian culture is situated within Western contexts. Chen’s work has been featured and published in numerous print and digital publications internationally, including MAPS (KR), Far-Near (USA), iGNANT (DE), Nasty (ITL), Knots (UK) among others. Chen received her BDes from OCAD University.

Theresa Wang is an arts administrator, curator, and writer based in Toronto. She is interested in the common ground and emerging forms within cinema and art. Her writing has appeared in C Magazine, Caméra Stylo, and Comparative Media Arts Journal, among others. She is currently the curatorial assistant at the Art Museum at the University of Toronto.
