“Black & Reflective is an immersive installation of oil paintings inspired by three conversations about identity between myself and acquaintances from African and African diasporic backgrounds. This series employs both the portrait and landscape painting genre for each person; to explore intimacy, connecting ideas of self to their relationship to black identity, and to highlight the relationship between self-identity and how we navigate our environment. As the works sequentially document my own understanding, the heart of the project becomes the importance of such personal exchanges in forming our worldview–and ultimately, demonstrates the power of one conversation.”

This exhibition features an online website as a source of research, paintings, conversations and preliminary materials for each of Leone’s four collaborators. These materials will be unveiled gradually throughout the course of the exhibition, leading up to the reveal of a mural Leone will be painting on site in our Project Space! We encourage periodic revisits, as the site will expand and grow in the weeks to come.
