De-escalation Workshop
October 8, 2019
Tuesday, October 8, 2019
6-9pm
In a neighbourhood which has traditionally been home to many deeply marginalized people, but is facing the pressures and difficulties of gentrification, there can be many points of tension and conflict between different residents. In this workshop we hope to provide some tools for preventing or de-escalating conflicts, including some ways to support people experiencing mental health crises. While it is not possible to manage all situations, de-escalation skills, combined with knowledge of your neighbourhood, can greatly reduce the need to involve police.
Facilitators:
Maggie Helwig is the priest at the Church of St Stephen-in-the-Fields in Kensington Market, an author, and a nonviolence trainer.
Andrea Budgey is the Anglican chaplain at the University of Toronto, an activist, and a musician.
