Call for Submissions: Productive Discomfort

This is an email based submission, more details below!

Xpace is seeking participation from students, emerging artists, designers, and researchers for the upcoming group exhibition “Productive Discomfort”, curated by Lauren Cullen. The exhibition will run from March 1st -30th, 2019. The selected participants will be invited to develop a hooked rug that conceptually engages around the theme of ‘unwelcome mats’.

This project considers the productive possibilities in challenging welcoming discourses. What happens when we draw attention to that which is unwelcome? What does confrontation and discomfort look like within the soft space of craft? How can social aspects of rug hooking and group making serve as a disruptive force? “Productive Discomfort” is mobilized around social conventions of rug hooking, in which folks gather to work on individual projects collectively. The rugs included in the show will be developed over a series of 5 workshops modelled after traditional rug hooking socials. All artists involved will need to complete their rug projects by February 26, 2019.

Interested artists do not need to be familiar with rug hooking or work in craft mediums. Instead, participants will be selected based on their willingness to learn and experiment with the technique, as well as their commitment to develop and construct a rug project around the exhibition theme. Through a series of 5 monthly workshops (October – February), the participating artists will be guided through the technical process of preparing a hooked project. The curator will also be available to further support the artists outside of the workshop structure.. Artists will be provided with the materials and tools needed to complete their work.

Intersectional feminism, queer critical theory, colonial histories, collective memory, textile work, craft.

Works must be ready for exhibition by February 26, 2019. Selected artists will be notified in September 2018. All selected participants will be paid a project fee for the exhibition.

Please contact the Lauren Cullen at [email protected]. Introduce yourself and your work (submit an example of a project you have completed) within 3-4 sentences. Please mention your interest and availability in participating in this project.
