Call for submissions: OCAD U Pride Activation 2017
Xpace Cultural Centre is seeking submissions from current OCAD University students and recent alumni to present a creative, participatory activation to take place at the Street Fair at Toronto Pride 2017. This project is presented in collaboration with the Office of Diversity, Equity & Sustainability Initiatives (ODESI) and Student Recruitment at OCAD U.
This call is open to all media, including but not limited to art installation, sculpture, performance, design, and everything in between. Potential projects might include: interactive installations, performances (roving or static), handouts, posters, etc.
The activation will take place at the Pride 2017 Street Fair, June 23-25, 2017.
The ideal project will:
-share a social justice message, such as creating space for representing BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Persons of Colour), transgender and disability activism;
-communicate the OCAD U community’s connection and engagement with the LGBTQ community, and demonstrate that the LGTBQ community is an important and valued part of the OCAD U community;
-create a way of engaging the broader Pride community in a participatory art/design project that is not transactional or commercial;
-consider sustainability – using project materials that are reusable and/or minimize waste.
The selected artist(s)/designer(s) will be paid a project fee and have access to production funds. The project will be selected by representatives from Xpace, ODESI and Student Recruitment in April 2017 based on criteria such as: critical analysis, opportunities for the community to be engaged in the activation, and the proven ability to complete a project of similar scale.
Applications must submit the following items:
1. Artist Statement (250-500 words): The Artist Statement should give a description of your overall practice as it relates to the project you are proposing.
2. Project Description (250-500 words): The project description should give a clear and concrete description of the activation you are proposing.
3. Curriculum Vitae (Max 3 pages): Your CV should include education and exhibition history, as well as any relevant experience, reviews, etc. It’s okay if it’s short!
4. Visual Support Material with accompanying Support Material List (5-10 images and/or minutes of video): Images must be in JPG format. You may provide links to video work/documentation. If you have made a version of the project previously, include those images. If you are proposing a project that has not yet been made, include images of previous work.
Please take the following into account in your proposal:
-We have access to 10’ x 10’ of street space situated between other tents/vendors; however, a roving performance is possible.
-There will be no on-site access to electricity.
-The weather may vary considerably over the weekend (from heavy rain to intense sun).
-Pride is very crowded and very noisy.
-The project does not need to be there all day for the entire weekend; however, there must be a presence each day.
