Call for submissions: Installation as a Subversive Art

Xpace Cultural Centre seeks submissions by emerging and/or student artists on the subject of where films sets and installation art merge. The exhibition, titled Installation as a Subversive Art (in reference to Amos Vogel’s seminal film history book) hopes to explore how installation art can translate the magic that occurs from films sets into the gallery setting. Fantasy and playfulness contribute to a successful film set. If installation art’s mandate is to fully engage the viewer in a physical space, what can artists learn from film and television sets?

Installation as a Subversive Art seeks to explore how to make the most of experiencing a work of art. The show asks, how can we derive the maximum amount of pleasure from a piece? How is enjoyment quantified?

Curated by Katie Kotler, the exhibition will run from November 3-December 9, 2017. Work in all mediums will be considered (including, but not limited to: sound, drawing, painting, photography, video, sculpture, installation, and performance).

Selected artists will be notified by early October. All selected participants will be paid a project fee for the exhibition.
