Call for submissions: Ghost Story

[title title=”Call for submissions: Ghost Story curated by Blair Swann”]

Xpace Cultural Centre is seeking work from emerging and/or student artists for an exhibition that explores ghosts, ghost stories, and their role in contemporary culture, curated by Blair Swann. The exhibition will run from October 28-December 3, 2016.

Henry James frames the ghost story as “the strange and sinister embroidered on the very type of the normal and easy” – in other words, a possibility or extension of reality. In what ways does a ghost story extend the “real”? Do we proliferate the existence of certain types of ghosts? If so, what types, and in what ways? How can we think of ghosts in the context of the virtual? How do ghosts function as metaphors that can engage topics such as duality, identity, history, and subjectivity.

Please submit works that include, consider, question, or explore: the figure of the ghost or ghostly bodies; physical or conceptual indications of loss or absence (culturally, emotionally, personally, etc); a feeling or mood, given weight or form through repetition or intensity; the ghost as the name something simply too difficult to explain, an effect of the unknown, or the search for its meaning; figures or forms as products of perception, tricks of the mind or eye, or illusions; and hauntology – especially as it relates to atemporality, historical disjunction, and the idea of the “lost future”.

Works must be ready for exhibition by October 18, 2016. Selected artists will be notified in early September. All selected participants will be paid a project fee for the exhibition.

To apply, you must provide:

1. Project Description (250-500 words): The project description should give a clear and concrete description of the work you are proposing for installation.

2. Curriculum Vitae (Max 3 pages): Your CV should include education and exhibition history, as well as any relevant experience, reviews, etc.

3. Visual Support Material with accompanying Support Material List (5-10 images and/or minutes of video): Images must be in JPG format. You may provide links to video work/documentation.

DEADLINE: September 7, 2016, 11:59pm
