“I grew up watching my mother cook with achiote almost every day. Achiote seeds, commonly used in Mexican, South American and Caribbean cuisine, dyed our food a vibrant yellow-orange, leaving a deep mark in my memory.”

“To Save/To Make” is a mixed media installation, using achiote as its foundation. This natural non-lightfast pigment acts as glue; bridging together Jasmine Cardenas’ lived experiences, working through anxieties, contemplating rituals, and navigating through dual identities. This artwork acts as a self-portrait, transitory and eventually fading in the sun.
