I WANT TO GO TO AFRICA
and Other Tales of High Adventure
a celebration of travel, cultural confusion & identity
Featuring: k-os, No Dynamics, Robert Munsch, Knock Knock. Who’s There? Comedy.
Velcrow Ripper, Sook-Yin Lee and more!
This year I traveled to Senegal and the Gambia on a journey that was beautiful, frightening and inspiring. I took photos and gathered field recordings. From that came the idea of I WANT TO GO TO AFRICA and Other Tales of High Adventure.
The money raised from the sales of the photos will go to the villages of the people who graciously allowed me to photograph them. Proceeds from the event will go to grassroots Senegal NGOs Solutions Direct and KEO.
From Dec. 13-17, I’ve invited my favourite creators to contribute their ideas on travel, cultural confusion and identity—a wildly diverse group of people including beloved kids author Robert Munsch, k-os, punk insurgents No Dynamics, filmmaker Andrea Dorfman, performance artist Mariko Tamaki and my friend’s
Dad, Mr. Comilang who’s a Filipino Elvis impersonator.
My dream is to create an explosive art happenin’ that upturns cultural assumptions—a utopian arts environment that encourages debate, entertains, and gets people going, where we can think, drink, and dance. It’s pretty much a wing-ding-ethno-freak-fabulous festival with a social conscience—a big beautiful
mess.
In the mad rush of the consumer-Christmas season, I WANT TO GO TO AFRICA and Other Tales of High Adventure is an opportunity to explore another world view. It’s gonna be good!
